Lil Slim grew up in the Hollygrove neighborhood of uptown New Orleans, blocks away from Lil Wayne. Wayne told me during the filming of The Carter that Lil Slim was responsible for introducing him to Baby Williams at the age of 11. As Wayne explained it to me, Lil Slim brought him along to the Odyssey Records store on Canal Street in the French Quarter for a Cash Money records signing. There he met Baby. It’s widely reported that in the weeks following that first meeting Wayne left numerous freestyle raps on the Cash Money Record office answering machine until Baby finally agreed to give him a shot. Slim recorded 3 albums for Cash Money Records, The Game is Cold in 1993, Powder Shop in 1994 and Thug’n & Pluggin’ in 1995 before splitting ways with Baby.
