Not sure of your dilemma, I'm 38 now, I started at the age of 18 as a graphic designer - out of passion. Went into art Direction, then into motion graphics, then into online finishing on the Avid DS Nitris, then into offline editing and longform, and now I can say I have the experience. Never stop learning that is the nature of creativity! Tomorrow I want to be a creative director - and I will!
