My Story
I’m about telling great stories, collaborating with great people and creating authentic work that connects particularly to young audiences worldwide.
My careeer in the film industry began at the local Virginia Blockbuster Video, earning $4.25 an hour restocking videotapes. I was 15. Inspired by the early 90’s American independent film scene as much as big Hollywood films like The Godfather trilogy and armed with a borrowed Panasonic VHS Camcorder, I shot numerous short films with friends, editing them tape-to-tape at the local public access station. One of these early experiments landed me at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
From that point, Directing has allowed me the opportunity to collaborate with some amazing people—from underground rap legend MF DOOM to one of my earliest influences, the renown filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.
I’m also fortunate that my four feature films have taken me personally to over 20 countries, and my work has been shown on every continent, including Antarctica. I’m proud to say I’m the first filmmaker in history to have had both a narrative film and documentary at the Sundance film festival and a screenplay in the Sundance screenwriter’s lab.
The universal power of stories, moving images and music that I have witnessed has been, and continues to be, a huge inspiration to me.
